The State of Headless CMS in 2026

We scored 15 of the most-used headless CMS, website builder, and commerce platforms on the same 11 criteria, independently and with no vendor sponsorship. This is what the numbers say about the field in 2026. All data was verified in July 2026, and the full scores and method are linked at the end.

The field is strong, but there is no clear winner

Across all 15 platforms, scores ranged from 7 to 9 out of 10, with a median of 8. No tool scored below 7, and none earned a perfect 10. In other words, most of these platforms are genuinely good, and the decision is rarely about quality. It is about fit. The two tools that topped the field, Sanity and Payload, both scored 9, and both are developer-first.

A free tier is now table stakes, so watch the cliff instead

13 of the 15 platforms offer a real free tier, so 'free to start' is no longer a differentiator. Only Shopify and Squarespace are trial-only. The number that actually matters is where the price jumps. Website builders stay cheap as you grow, with entry plans from 5 to 30 dollars a month. The enterprise headless CMSs are where it gets expensive fast: Contentful reaches its first serious paid plan at 300 dollars a month, Cosmic at 299, and Hygraph at 199. The entry price is marketing. The price at your scale is the real number.

Data ownership is still a minority sport

Only 4 of the 15 platforms are open source and genuinely self-hostable: Payload, Strapi, Medusa, and headless WordPress. Everyone else is SaaS, which means you rent the platform and your content lives on their infrastructure. If avoiding lock-in matters to you, the field narrows to roughly a quarter of the options immediately.

AI is mostly a label, and real agent support is rare

Nearly every platform now markets some form of AI, but genuine support for AI agents is far less common. Only 2 of the 15, Strapi and Payload, ship an MCP server that lets coding agents manage content directly. Both are open source and code-first. So the tools actually built for an agent-driven workflow are not the big SaaS names, they are the developer-owned ones.
